The Urda stretch has suffered at least 10 incidents in the last year, but it was not considered one of the black spots of the railway system
Between October 28, 2026, and October 1, 2025, Adif reported 10 incidents on the Urda network segment, including a recent collision resulting in 69 fatalities. Despite this, the area is not classified as a black spot for accidents. Most incidents involved signaling issues, with updates to the safety system expected to be completed by early 2026. Prior to the recent accident, the last report was on July 7, concerning delays due to signaling problems. Comparatively, the number of incidents in this segment is not unusually high for a high-speed line. The CIAF has not investigated any incidents in this section over the past three years, focusing instead on areas like Madrid and Barcelona. The increase in high-speed travelers has been significant, although recent accidents have impacted ridership numbers. The annual report from the Railway Safety Agency shows a steady increase in significant accidents, with 2026 being particularly tragic due to multiple fatal incidents.
