The volume of travelers on the most profitable corridor has increased by 160% since 2021

The train route between Barcelona and Madrid has seen a 160% increase in travelers since 2021, making it the most profitable corridor in Spain. This surge is attributed to lower prices due to new competitors entering the market, although ticket prices remain the highest in the country. The demand for high-speed travel is projected to grow significantly, with 14.4 million trips expected by 2025. However, a slight decline in passengers occurred in 2025 and continued into 2026, largely due to safety concerns following a train accident. Despite this, trains remain the preferred mode of transport for 80% of travelers between the two cities, with ticket prices averaging €52.89, the highest in the national network. The corridor generated €674 million in revenue in 2025, covering its operational costs.
