Electric cars before gasoline? The market in Europe is changing, but…

The European car market is performing well in 2026, with a 5.7% increase in registrations. Hybrid vehicles dominate with 36.3% market share, followed by fully electric cars at 22.7%. Electric vehicle registrations reached nearly 2 million, showing significant growth, especially in France and Germany. However, the classification of hybrids includes both full hybrids and mild hybrids, which can skew market perceptions. Plug-in hybrids are also gaining traction, with a 10.1% share. Conversely, gasoline vehicles have seen a 19.1% decline, while diesel vehicles now represent only 7.1% of the market. The data indicates a shift towards electrification but highlights the complexity of hybrid classifications.
