Karácsony's proposal accepted: BKK will be regionally expanded
The Budapest Assembly approved the proposal to transform the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) into a regional transport organizer, with 17 votes in favor and 11 abstentions. Mayor Gergely Karácsony emphasized the historical significance of this initiative, aimed at integrating local and regional transport systems. The agreement between the city and the government will improve the city's budget situation, allowing the state-owned National Transport Center (OKK) to acquire a 50% stake in BKK. Starting January 1, 2027, BKK will operate as the Budapest Metropolitan Transport Center, coordinating various transport services. The costs not covered by revenue will be shared equally between the city and the state, with a contribution of at least 170 billion HUF planned for 2027. The proposal aims to enhance the efficiency of public fund usage and streamline transport services.
