For the first time, a human has contracted the Shamonda virus spreading among livestock in France.

French authorities reported the first human case of the Shamonda virus, previously only found in livestock. The virus was transmitted by a mosquito bite in eastern France. The deceased, a man in his sixties, had underlying health issues that may have made him more susceptible to infections. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control is monitoring the situation but states the virus poses no threat to the general population. Shamonda virus primarily affects cattle but has also been found in horses, alpacas, sheep, and goats. It was first identified in Nigeria in the 1960s and confirmed in Europe in July 2023.
