In Guyana, a record drought complicates access to drinking water
In response to an unprecedented drought exacerbated by climate change and a strong El Niño, the prefect of Guyane activated the drought emergency plan on October 22. Météo-France reported that July and August were the driest months since 1967, with September receiving only 2.9 mm of rain compared to an average of 18 mm. This rainfall deficit has disrupted vital river traffic, prompting authorities to establish an air bridge to deliver 100 tons of supplies weekly to isolated communities. The first military flight occurred between Cayenne and Maripasoula, a southern town with 15,000 residents.
