In Romania, citizens are taking on the issue of online misinformation
Since joining the EU in 2007, Romanian civil society has focused on anti-corruption and rule of law. Recently, far-right protesters have emerged, especially after the controversial annulment of the presidential election on December 6, 2024. Independent candidate Calin Georgescu, an ultranationalist, initially led the polls but faced election annulment due to irregularities and alleged Russian interference. In May 2025, centrist Nicusor Dan won the presidency. The 2024 election highlighted online manipulation, prompting citizens to engage in digital spaces to combat misinformation. The Facebook group "AI de noi" has over 12,000 members actively reporting fake accounts and misinformation, alongside the rise of fact-checking initiatives by NGOs and journalists.
