Students demand an end to national exams for penalizing poorer students

Students are demanding the abolition of national exams, arguing they disadvantage poorer students while favoring those who can afford better preparation. The movement Voz aos Estudantes has gathered 5,000 signatures, highlighting that exams do not ensure equal opportunities in education and access to higher education. João Baldaia, a leader of the movement, stated that the current system leaves many behind, particularly those from low-income families. An analysis revealed that only four public schools ranked in the top 50 based on exam results, with most top-performing schools serving fewer disadvantaged students. The movement advocates for continuous assessment instead of national exams to promote true equality in educational success.
