Study: 36% of medical students consider emigrating
A study by the National Association of Medical Students reveals that over one-third of medical students in Portugal consider emigrating due to poor working conditions and salaries in the National Health Service (SNS). Key concerns include long working hours, lack of work-life balance, and inadequate salary recognition. The president of ANEM, Maria Fontão, emphasizes the need for better incentives to attract doctors to specialties facing shortages. While many students still view SNS as a career option, they prefer mixed work arrangements between public and private sectors. The study highlights the importance of addressing territorial distribution and improving conditions in rural areas to retain future healthcare professionals.
