US announces agreement to acquire 850 F-35 fighters

The Pentagon has announced a 10-year framework agreement with Lockheed Martin for at least 850 F-35 fighter jets, pending Congressional approval. This agreement aims to modernize the F-35 fleet and includes spare parts, modernization equipment, and maintenance services. Lockheed Martin plans to maintain an annual production of 156 aircraft and will invest at least $7 billion to support the program. However, the deal is not yet finalized as contract terms and delivery schedules need negotiation after Congressional authorization. The F-35 program has faced delays and cost overruns, particularly with technological upgrades, but this new agreement seeks to enhance production predictability amid rising military equipment demand due to international conflicts.
