MEPs urged China to negotiate an agreement to avoid a trade war
A delegation of MEPs urged China to negotiate a comprehensive agreement with the EU to prevent a trade war, warning of potential retaliation measures. This request follows a two-day visit to China, where concerns were raised about the EU's trade deficit with China reaching one billion euros daily by 2025. The MEPs met with Chinese officials, including Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, emphasizing that a trade war would be detrimental to all parties. They highlighted recent positive steps, such as China's agreement to significantly reduce hybrid car exports to the EU, and called for broader agreements to enhance economic and political ties. MEP Pascal Canfin stressed the urgency of stabilizing trade relations and noted that the EU has retaliation tools for trade imbalances, while expressing hope for continued cooperation.
