Europe could face colder weather as polar vortex weakens

The polar vortex in the northern hemisphere may weaken unusually early, with models predicting significant changes in the next 10 days. This could lead to a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event, affecting weather patterns and increasing high-pressure areas in mid-latitudes. The polar vortex typically strengthens in winter, but disturbances can push cold air southward. An SSW occurs when stratospheric temperatures rise rapidly, disrupting the vortex's circulation. While a significant weakening is likely, a complete reversal of winds remains uncertain. Additionally, a low-pressure system in the Mediterranean is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Italy, with warnings issued for central and southern regions.
