Evacuation of civilians begins in besieged Ukrainian city of Oleshky
Residents of Oleshky, a besieged city in southern Ukraine, were evacuated in a humanitarian operation, marking the first such effort in nearly five years. The city has faced severe shortages of food and medical supplies, prompting concerns of starvation among its remaining population. A convoy of buses and ambulances delivered aid and facilitated the evacuation of those wishing to leave for Russia or Ukraine. Despite the proximity of Ukrainian territory, evacuees must travel to Anapa, Russia, before heading to Belarus and then back to Ukraine. Many residents chose to stay, citing health concerns and a desire to remain close to family. The operation was made possible by a localized ceasefire, which has been rare since the conflict began.
