A European country will have a female president, surveys claim. However, there is a catch, she is "pro-Russian".
Iliana Jotova has won the second round of Bulgaria's presidential elections, leading former Prime Minister Andrej Gjurov by several percentage points. If confirmed, she would be the first elected female president in Bulgaria's history. Jotova, opposing military aid to Ukraine, received support from the Progressive Bulgaria party and the Bulgarian Socialist Party. Gjurov, backed by pro-European opposition parties, campaigned independently despite his previous role as interim Prime Minister. The election campaign coincided with increased drone attacks in the Black Sea, raising public debate about Bulgaria's stance on Russia. Official partial results are expected soon.
