Experiment with solar panels above raspberry plantation is positive: "Less water needed and better fruit"
Initial results from an experiment with solar panels above a raspberry plantation are promising, showing reduced water needs and improved fruit quality. The Proefcentrum Fruitteelt in Sint-Truiden is investigating the potential of agrivoltaics to generate energy while minimizing fruit production loss. The panels have helped maintain plant growth during extreme heat and reduced water evaporation. However, there are limits to how much light can be blocked without affecting growth. Future research will test different panel coverage levels and assess the impact on other fruit types, including pears. Agrivoltaics could provide benefits during extreme weather, but installation challenges remain for remote plantations.
