Ezelhoeve in Baarle-Nassau deploys protection dogs Capone and Diva against wolves in Noorderkempen
Ezelhoeve in Baarle-Nassau has introduced two livestock guardian dogs, Capone and Diva, to protect its 55 donkeys from wolves in the nearby Noorderkempen region. This decision comes as wolves increasingly appear in the border area. The founder, Peter-Paul van den Berg, noted that wolf sightings are now within 1.5 kilometers of the facility. To enhance security, the shelter has also upgraded fencing, installed electric wires, and set up a camera and alarm system. The dogs, of the Mastín Español de Trabajo breed, will patrol the area at night when the donkeys are alone. Their role is to deter wolves rather than confront them, as wolves tend to avoid risks. This initiative is described as a pilot project, making Ezelhoeve the first donkey shelter in Belgium and the Netherlands to implement such measures.
