Families saved an additional 302 million euros in 2025. Inflation drove the effort

Portuguese families saved €26.4 billion in 2025, a slight increase from 2024, but inflation led to a real decrease in savings. The savings rate fell to 12.3% of gross income. Nearly half of families had some debt, primarily mortgages. Debt payments consumed at least 15% of annual net income for many families, with significant disparities based on age. The average wealth per family rose to €278,300, largely due to real estate value increases. Housing costs accounted for 39% of family expenses, with essential expenses being more burdensome for lower-income families.
