White plastic chairs and a threatening former president in Orbán's style: Serbia welcomed the chance of regime change with a folk festival

On Sunday evening, Serbia experienced a double liberation as citizens celebrated the acknowledgment of electoral defeat by President Aleksandar Vučić. The opposition, led by the Student List, won the parliamentary elections, marking a significant shift in power. Despite fears of violence from pro-Vučić supporters, the former president conceded defeat shortly after polls closed. The new parliament will include 140 student representatives and 105 from Vučić's party, with minority parties sharing the remaining seats. The low voter turnout in Hungarian-populated areas indicated dissatisfaction with the Hungarian Alliance's collaboration with Vučić. Many Belgraders compared Vučić's regime to the recently ousted Hungarian government, emphasizing the need for change and the potential for peaceful transitions of power.
