Feminist Aletta Jacobs receives statue in the center of The Hague
Aletta Jacobs will receive a statue in The Hague by the end of 2028, honoring her contributions as a feminist and the first female doctor in the Netherlands. The statue's location has shifted from Hofvijver to Wijnhaven, near Leiden University. The initiative, proposed by Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven in 2017, aims to commemorate Jacobs ahead of her centenary death anniversary in 2029. Jacobs was a key figure in the first feminist wave, advocating for women's suffrage and equality in marriage, and played a significant role in establishing women's voting rights in 1919. She is already commemorated at the University of Groningen and is included in the Canon of Dutch history.
