France: First case of Shamonda virus in humans. Patient has died
French authorities reported a possible infection from a biting midge carrying the Shamonda virus, which circulated among animals in the eastern part of the country. The deceased patient had a severe illness that increased susceptibility to infections. An investigation is underway to determine if the virus was the direct cause of death. The ECDC is in contact with French authorities to assess public health implications, but currently, no health risk to the general population has been identified. The Shamonda virus primarily affects livestock, with significant production losses reported on affected farms.
