Brilliant plan or gigantic risk? Egypt builds the "New Nile" through the desert

Egypt is launching an ambitious project called "New Delta" to transform 924,000 hectares of desert into arable land for crops. The initiative includes a massive water treatment facility in El Hammam, capable of processing 7.5 million cubic meters of water daily. However, the project faces significant challenges, including high energy demands and potential soil salinization due to mineral salts in the irrigation water. The water supply relies on three sources: treated drainage water, Nile water, and groundwater, with concerns about sustainability and quality. While aiming to enhance food security, the project's technical and environmental risks raise questions about its viability.
