Ghent opens first burial forest without memorial plaques: "Deceased completely merge into nature"

Ghent has opened its first burial forest where ashes of deceased individuals are buried without memorial plaques, allowing them to fully integrate into nature. This initiative responds to the wishes of residents who prefer a natural return after death. The forest, located in the Vinderhoutse Bossen, will be part of a public green space and will not feature any markers or urns. The city aims to accommodate the final wishes of its citizens, building on the existing natural burial site in Drongen. There is also ongoing research into other burial options, including water scattering and locations oriented towards Mecca.
