Government approves final version of the new inheritance regime

The Portuguese government approved a new inheritance regime aimed at addressing the issue of vacant houses tied up in inheritance disputes. Minister António Leitão Amaro highlighted that there are 485,000 vacant homes, many in good condition, and the new law allows heirs to demand the sale of properties after two years without agreement. He criticized the current rental regime as restrictive and blamed previous governments for the housing crisis, emphasizing the need for responsible legislation to increase housing availability. He also noted the impact of immigration on housing demand, stating that the current government is not responsible for rising housing prices, which require more than just increased construction to resolve.
