Government will never advocate for historical reparations to former Portuguese colonies says Foreign Minister

The Portuguese Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, stated that the current government will not support historical reparations to former colonies, emphasizing a focus on reconciliation instead. He highlighted that the government, formed by the Social Democratic Party and the CDS-PP, will not pursue reparations, but will promote reconciliation with countries sharing historical ties. Rangel condemned historical slavery but noted that acknowledging past mistakes does not diminish national pride. He referenced previous government actions aimed at reconciliation, such as the rehabilitation of historical sites in Mozambique and Cape Verde. The topic gained attention following remarks by former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa regarding Portugal's colonial past and the potential for reparations.
