Government prepares new rules for the reception of the elderly

The Portuguese government aims to increase the number of elderly individuals in family care, a social response that has been underutilized for 35 years. A legislative proposal is underway to clarify operational rules and enhance this service. The Ministry of Labor confirmed that the goal is to adapt the response to current realities, ensuring better support for both families and recipients. Currently, only 649 individuals are in family care, with a significant portion being highly dependent. The initiative is present in 13 districts, with the highest numbers in Vila Real, Braga, Porto, and Aveiro. This measure is intended for situations where effective social support is lacking, ensuring adequate care for the elderly and disabled.
