Mushrooms that reveal miniature people. They do not contain known hallucinogens.
The fungus Lanmaoa asiatica, found in southwestern China and northern Philippines, induces unique hallucinations of tiny people. Researchers from the University of Utah discovered that these experiences are not linked to known psychedelic substances. The hallucinations, described as 'liliputian', feature figures resembling elves or clowns, behaving realistically in their environment. Despite extensive studies, the chemical responsible for these visions remains unidentified, suggesting a novel compound may be at play. This phenomenon has been documented since the 1930s, with similar reports emerging globally. The findings were published in the journal 'Mycologia'.
