Housing: Government approves legislation that regulates new rules for unlocking undivided inheritances
The Portuguese government has approved a decree-law aimed at resolving issues related to indivisible inheritances among heirs. This legislation follows a law passed in July, allowing for a special process for selling indivisible properties and amending the Civil Code. The decree addresses the problem of vacant houses, with over 485,000 properties in Portugal unoccupied due to inheritance disputes. It enables any heir to request a sale after two years without agreement, streamlining the process and allowing for market-value sales through electronic auctions. The law also introduces a testamentary executor to facilitate inheritance distribution, aiming to expedite the succession process.
