Housing. Government wants to accelerate the transfer of 87 thousand state properties to municipalities
The Portuguese government aims to expedite the transfer of approximately 83,000 public properties to municipalities to enhance affordable housing availability. Minister Miguel Pinto Luz stated this during a parliamentary session discussing the 2027 State Budget. He highlighted that this is the first comprehensive inventory of state properties, noting that while many are suitable for housing, about 30,000 are rural and unusable for this purpose. The minister emphasized the need for more housing construction, projecting that between 70,000 and 80,000 homes could be built annually starting in 2031. He acknowledged that the housing crisis cannot be resolved solely through private initiatives and stressed the importance of social support during this transition.
