Up to nine signaling failures in the section of the train collision in Urda since 2024

Since 2024, the Urda train collision section has reported at least nine signaling failures, with some incidents linked to cable theft. The Madrid-Sevilla line, still using the outdated LZB system, is undergoing updates to implement the ERTMS level 2 system. Minister Óscar Puente acknowledged the LZB system's obsolescence, noting it has been in use since 1992. Recent failures include multiple incidents in 2026, primarily due to cable theft, while the LZB system is criticized for its high maintenance costs and outdated technology.
