A police officer found a man at home in Holt, then secretly moved into his house and renovated it for millions.

In July 2022, 71-year-old Dennis West was found dead at home, leading to an investigation into police misconduct. Officer Brian Louis Sguros, who responded to the scene, illegally occupied West's house for years, using the deceased's identity to renovate the property. Sguros claimed he acted to prevent squatters and crime. He accessed West's personal information through police databases and forged documents to obtain renovation permits. The fraud was uncovered when a real estate company bought the house from West's heirs and encountered Sguros. He faces charges including abuse of office and identity theft, with bail set at $25,000.
