Hungary: 70 years after Soviet crackdown, leaders honour uprising victims

Seventy years after Hungary's 1956 uprising, Prime Minister Péter Magyar commemorated the victims alongside Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized freedom and democracy. Magyar participated in a flag-raising ceremony and honored memorials, including that of executed former Prime Minister Imre Nagy. The uprising lasted 15 days before being suppressed by Soviet forces, resulting in significant casualties. Von der Leyen praised the bravery of Hungarians during a parliamentary session, linking their struggle to recent political changes in Hungary. Her visit coincides with Hungary's efforts to secure the release of EU funds, which are currently frozen due to concerns over rule-of-law issues.
