It could cost twenty times more to remove the asbestos stone from the roads of Szombathely than to cover it.
The removal of asbestos-contaminated gravel in Szombathely could cost nearly twenty times more than covering the affected roads with bitumen. The process may take 10-12 months and will involve significant expenses. The city has already started temporary bitumen coverage, costing approximately 5,800 HUF per square meter, totaling around 960 million HUF. However, the final removal and disposal of the hazardous material will cost about 116,000 HUF per square meter. Szombathely's local government has applied for funding from a government asbestos fund, estimating a total cost of 2.5 billion HUF for asbestos remediation, with a 10% local contribution. The contaminated areas were previously covered with gravel containing asbestos from Austria, and Greenpeace has launched an online map to track these hazardous sites.
