Iconic Apekop train runs (now really) last passenger service
The Mat '64 train, known as Apekop, symbolized Dutch trains for years and made its last regular passenger service today. Although it was retired in 2016, it returned unexpectedly last year due to a shortage of trains at Keolis. The train was temporarily leased from a volunteer group managing old trains. The Apekop departed for its final journey at 12:25 PM from Barneveld Zuid. The Mat '64 was the last train type built in the Netherlands, first introduced in 1961, and was popular for its distinctive nose design, resembling the older Hondekop.
