Island in the Philippines swaps concrete for nature

Residents of Pamarawan Island in the Philippines have turned to bamboo stakes and oyster shells to build a natural flood barrier after concrete solutions failed. This innovative approach aims to reduce wave impact and promote mangrove growth, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional flood defenses. The project, initiated by the municipality of Malolos in collaboration with a Dutch engineering firm, has shown early success in mitigating flooding effects during typhoons. Local fishermen report improved conditions, with the barriers helping to keep water away from their homes and livelihoods. The initiative is seen as a long-term solution that could stabilize the marine environment over the next decade.
