In a year, 22,000 rental homes have disappeared to the purchase market
Research by CBS, commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior, reveals a significant decline in private rental homes in the Netherlands. In 2025, 22,000 private rental units were lost, compared to a decrease of only 3,000 the previous year, bringing the total to 1.16 million. While private landlords reduced their holdings by 37,000 units, housing corporations increased theirs by 14,000. The shift is attributed to owners converting their business structures rather than actual sales. The trend is particularly pronounced in Utrecht and North Holland, where a significant percentage of private rentals transitioned to the ownership market. The sold properties are generally more luxurious and expensive than those remaining for rent.
