The new electoral law is in effect. Majority prize, preferences, and candidate for prime minister: what you need to know

The new electoral law, Law 180/2026, came into effect on October 24, following its publication and approval. It replaces the previous uninominal constituencies with a proportional system, introducing a 3% threshold and a fixed majority prize for coalitions exceeding 42% of votes. This prize consists of 70 deputies and 35 senators, with a cap of 220 deputies and 113 senators. Additionally, parties must declare their candidate for prime minister when submitting their lists, while ensuring no binding mandate is imposed, respecting the constitutional prerogative of the President of the Republic.
