INEM registers an average of 26 suspected stroke cases per day
The National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) reported over 6,700 suspected stroke cases in 2026, averaging 26 daily. This increase reflects improved identification and reporting of cases rather than a rise in incidence. Most cases involved women, with an average age of 77. Major cities like Lisbon and Porto had the highest numbers. The INEM emphasized the importance of quick emergency response and public awareness of stroke symptoms, as early treatment is crucial for recovery. Additionally, a call for a national rehabilitation plan for stroke survivors was made to ensure equitable access to timely care.
