Hospitalizations for burns in children increased by 35% this year at D. Estefânia Hospital
Burn injuries in children have increased by 35% this year at Hospital Dona Estefânia in Lisbon, with nearly 100 admissions reported. Most cases involve children under four, primarily due to hot liquids. Diogo Casal, coordinator of the Burn Unit, highlighted that many accidents occur at home, often when children pull tablecloths or come into contact with hot surfaces. The average hospitalization lasted 13 days, with severe burns requiring multiple surgeries. Beyond physical injuries, these burns can lead to emotional and social consequences. Prevention measures include keeping hot items out of reach and supervising young children near heat sources. Immediate care for burns involves cooling the area with running water and avoiding home remedies.
