International Criminal Court wins EU's Sakharov human rights prize
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has received the EU's Sakharov Prize for human rights, amidst threats from the Trump administration. This recognition follows the announcement of sanctions against the ICC by the US, coinciding with the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to former ICC judge Navi Pillay. ICC President Tomoko Akane emphasized the significance of the award in light of the challenges faced by the court. Established in 2002, the ICC prosecutes serious crimes like war crimes and genocide. The Sakharov Prize, named after dissident Andrei Sakharov, honors individuals and organizations advocating for human rights.
