Italy demands Israel release of five activists detained during olive harvest
Italy has demanded the immediate release of five Italian activists detained by Israeli authorities in the occupied West Bank while they were assisting Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest. The detentions occurred amid rising tensions characterized by violence and confrontations involving settlers and international activists. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned the arrests, asserting that the activists were not committing any crimes. Israeli authorities claimed the detainees were in a military closure area and had disobeyed military orders. The olive harvest, crucial for Palestinian communities, has seen increased violence and restrictions, highlighting the risks faced by those supporting farmers in the region. Recently, two Portuguese citizens, including journalist Ricardo Ribeiro, were also detained but have since returned to Portugal.
