Italian government can detain young people preventively during riots with new law
Protests against inadequate services and living costs erupted in several cities, notably in Milan where riots occurred. Prime Minister Meloni condemned the violence, emphasizing that while protesting is a right, destruction is not acceptable. New laws will impose harsher penalties for rioting, including potential five-year prison sentences for participating in dangerous groups. Parents can now be held accountable for their children's actions, and police can detain youths aged 14 to 17 preventively. Additionally, the government is deploying 500 soldiers to Milan to enhance security, although their police powers were limited due to constitutional concerns from President Mattarella.
