Italy and Spain lift border controls after migrant crisis around Ceuta
Italy was the first to implement border measures to prevent migrants from Ceuta from traveling to Italy, citing internal security risks. Spain responded with similar controls. These measures will end on Thursday following a phone call between the interior ministers of both countries. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez agreed not to extend the measures after assessing the situation. Authorities noted that agreements on information exchange regarding Schengen area security have improved. Thousands of migrants traveled from Morocco to Ceuta in late July, but most returned shortly after, leading to the closure of many migrant camps in the enclave.
