Jeanne and the Lalique Butterflies
Around 1900, René Lalique was commissioned to create a hairbrush and comb for Jeanne, a young autistic girl. The turtle shell was believed to impart patience and tranquility. After using the hairpiece, Jeanne began to change gradually, becoming more expressive and engaged with her family. Her father wondered if the piece was magical, but when given to her mother, no change occurred. Eventually, Jeanne developed a ritual of self-care with the brush, which helped her grow and connect with herself. Lalique suggested that perhaps it was not the objects but Jeanne's own hands that facilitated her transformation, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and care.
