One decision, another life. Today is Donation and Transplantation Day.
Transplantation involves the transfer of organs, tissues, or cells to patients with organ failure, significantly improving their quality of life. Commonly transplanted organs include kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and pancreas. In Poland, organ donation after death follows the principle of presumed consent, allowing organ retrieval unless the deceased expressed opposition. Patients awaiting transplants are placed on a national waiting list, with allocation based on medical urgency and compatibility rather than order of registration. Ethical concerns surround organ donation, particularly regarding brain death determination and organ trafficking, which the WHO opposes, advocating for voluntary and unpaid donations.
