It has been revealed what happens to the air-polluting particles after we inhale them

Hungarian researchers studied the behavior of airborne microscopic particles over ten years, revealing their varying deposition in the respiratory system based on their sources. They categorized particles into five groups, including those from traffic and fossil fuel combustion. While some particles are exhaled, others remain in the respiratory system, with traffic-related semi-volatile particles accumulating the most. Physical activity influences where particles settle, with deeper lung regions affected during intense exercise. Although the study did not directly assess health impacts, it aids in understanding air pollution risks and developing better air quality protection measures.
