72-hour kit: EU wants Europeans ready for disasters

The European Commission has recommended that member states encourage citizens to prepare emergency kits for self-sufficiency in the first 72 hours after a disaster. This non-binding recommendation was made during the European Civil Protection Forum in Brussels, emphasizing that national response systems are often under significant pressure during this period. The kits should include non-perishable food, water, medications, and first aid supplies. Additionally, the Commission suggests integrating climate risk preparedness into educational curricula and making preparation measures more inclusive for people with disabilities. It also proposes establishing a European Preparedness Day on October 23 to promote active citizen participation in emergency preparedness.
