Climate-friendly flying could avoid billion-dollar damages
Air travel significantly contributes to climate change, causing annual damages estimated at €2.85 trillion. Optimized flight routes and sustainable fuels can mitigate these effects. The aviation sector is already integrated into emissions trading, with plans to incentivize greener routes by 2028. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The EU aims for a 70% SAF share by 2050. Governments can promote eco-friendly flying by imposing taxes on flights and encouraging alternatives like trains. Eliminating tax breaks for flights could generate funds for greener aviation initiatives.
