KNMI now warns differently about dangerous weather: 'Hopefully less often unnecessarily'
The KNMI is changing its weather warning system to provide more localized alerts, reducing unnecessary warnings for entire provinces. Starting November 2, the institute will use flexible area maps instead of provincial color codes, allowing residents to better prepare for specific weather conditions. Each weather phenomenon will have its own warning map, improving accuracy. This change follows a legal approval in May and aims to enhance public awareness while minimizing excessive alerts, particularly in larger provinces. The KNMI has already begun issuing targeted warnings for severe thunderstorms in its app.
