The European Commission has spoken out regarding the Constitutional Tribunal. A clear message for the Polish authorities
The recent events surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal in Poland have escalated tensions, particularly after the appointment of eight new judges by the Sejm. The Venice Commission confirmed that this appointment falls within the Sejm's constitutional powers. The European Court of Human Rights issued interim measures to prevent hindrances to judges appointed in March 2026. Following a suspension of the Tribunal's president and vice-president, protests erupted outside the Tribunal. President Karol Nawrocki interrupted his trip to Senegal to address the situation, leading to conflicting accounts of the events. Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the actions against the Tribunal as part of a broader attack on the rule of law by the ruling party, PiS, and called for cooperation to restore legal order.
