End of the ban on combustion engines after 2035? There is a groundbreaking compromise in the EP
Negotiators from the European People's Party, Socialists and Democrats, and Renew Europe reached a compromise on CO₂ emission targets for new cars. The agreement allows the continued sale of combustion and hybrid vehicles after 2035 under certain conditions. Instead of achieving zero emissions by 2035, the target is now a reduction of 87.5% from 2021 levels. This includes incentives for using low-emission steel and adjustments for small cars and plug-in hybrids. The deal aims to provide consumers with more choice and protect jobs in the automotive industry amid rising competition and tariffs. The agreement must be approved by the European Parliament and member states, with a vote scheduled for December.
